PMS Tension - Ask the Doctor Q & A
People know when I'm PMSing. For instance, before my period, I constantly fight with my manager. It's like everything she says bugs me. Even if she looks at me, I'm like, "What? What did I do?" I'm so touchy. I don't do it intentionally, but it's just what I go through. Even my kids tell me, "Mom, relax!" And I just start crying because I can't stand it anymore. I've had this since I was 11, and I'm 39 now. It's quite a long time of having to deal with feeling so much tension with PMS. As bad as the symptoms are, the worst part might be that nothing has helped. I'm still dealing with it. It makes me think nothing can help me.

Patricia, your letter reminds me that before there was the word PMS and the condition premenstrual syndrome, it was called premenstrual tension or PMT. That certainly sounds like what you're describing: on edge and tense. Feeling "touchy," crying from just not being able to take it anymore—I know you don't do it intentionally. Unfortunately, it's hard to make people understand that, and it's hard to go through those emotions over and over again and feel like, despite your best efforts, it's as if it is out of your control.
As for the part about nothing helping you: we can help you. We created PMS Comfort for exactly this purpose, so I hope you'll take a look around.
